FAQs

We have put together a list of the most Frequently Asked Questions for your information, covering the following topics:

MEMBERSHIP
Q. Is there a membership fee? If so how much is it?
A. Yes, to enjoy the many benefits of our group there is a membership fee of $25 for 6 months, or $45 for 12 months.

Q. Can I attend an event before I pay my membership?
A. Yes, you may attend up to two non-paid events before deciding if the group is right for you.

Q. What are the benefits of joining this group
A. There are many benefits to becoming a member, many of which make us stand out from any other single parent group in Melbourne.  They are:

  • A social calendar organised for you, all you have to do is rsvp, turn up, and have a good time!
  • Camps are organised for you , all we ask is that you RSVP, pay on time, turn up, and enjoy.
  • FREE annual christmas party
  • FREE quarterly Family Fun Day
  • FREE annual Single Parents Active Kids birthday party
  • When you RSVP to certain limited-offer special events, we pay for you now, you pay us much later. More time for you to save!
  • We have saved our members over $200,000 in the last few years!
  • Camps are paid for you in advance, you pay us much later and generally in instalments, making managing the finances much easier and less stressful! We even offer different types     of camps (catered/non-catered, tents/cabins/interstate, family-friendly/parents only)!
  • We do hold public liability insurance as the safety of our members and their kids is paramount!
  • We encourage our members to offer suggestions for Melbourne-wide events, so they have a say in what we do and where we go!
  • Sharing experiences with like-minded single parents and their kids.
  • HEAPS of wonderful families and new friends to make!

Q. I’d like to become a member, what is the next step?
A. Download our membership form from the website and email or post it in to the address provided, then let us know when you have deposited your membership fee and we’ll get you up and running!

Q. Is there any benefit to introducing others to the group who then become members?
A. Two months will be added to your membership, as well as the genuine satisfaction of giving another single parent family the opportunity to get together with like-minded single parents and their kids.

GENERAL
Q. Is there an age limit?
A. No, the only criteria is that you are a single parent. We have had members join with kids as young as 3 months old and as old as 25 years of age, and as we run parents-only events every week they can also get involved.

Q. What is the average age?
A. About 7, we have kids under 1 and over 15 that are active within our group, so about 7-8 would be the average age.

Q. I am quite shy. Is it likely I will turn up to an event and no-one will talk to me because they all know each other already?
A. No event goes ahead without a host, it is that host’s role to introduce all in attendance to each other.  New members are highlighted to the hosts, so they know to try and get them involved where possible.

EVENTS
Q. Are there events in my area?
A. We promote one event in each area of Melbourne each and every weekend, so your area should definitely be covered, if not very close to.

Q. Do you have the one central meeting spot?
A. No, we run events all over Melbourne.

Q. Do you run holidays interstate/overseas?
A. Definitely.  Gold Coast, Cairns, Sydney, Noosa, Bali, Thailand and in 2014, a South Pacific Cruise.

Q. If I join now can I still attend a camp after first instalment has passed?
A. Yes, we have an instalment structure to help members afford our camps, but we try and give all members the opportunity to be part of the magic that is Single Parents Active Kids.

Q. What if I see an event I like, but don’t have the funds to pay straight away? Is there some sort of system where I can pay in instalments for the bigger events such as camps?
A. The beauty of our group is that we pay on our behalf and then you pay it back later on.  An instalment structure is in place for every camp we run.  The South Pacific Cruise is an example, it had a 4 instalment structure in place.

Q. It might not be possible for me to attend many events. Is there a certain number of events I need to attend each year to remain a member?
A. No, you can attend as few or as many events as you wish!

Q. What happens if I re-partner just after paying my membership? Can I still attend events?
A. Yes, as long as you join our group when you are a single parent then you are more than welcome to attend more events. Our group is about building friendships, if you have re-partnered we do not wish for that friendship to go away, but obviously when at one of our events you must respect the environment you are in.

Q. Can I suggest an event if there is something I really want to go to and think others might enjoy too?
A. We welcome suggestions for events, and ask for input into our events calendar every quarter.  If something comes up within that time that you would like to suggest, just check our calendar first to make sure it doesn’t clash with another event, and let us know!

Q. I don’t have a lot of money to spend on entertainment for my family, do you run many free events?
A. There are a minimum of 2 free events every month, we also promote events at parks and beaches where you can bring your own food and make the day out as cheap as possible.

Q. What do you suggest is the best way to maximise meeting new families and making new friends?
A. Camps are our best and easiest form of socialising!  It can be daunting to attend your first camp, but trust us, you will not be sorry that you did!
